At the moment I am having problems with 3 files one is 23MB, one is 1.6MB
and the other is only 519kb.
Ok the first one is especially large but this cannot be the problem with the
other 2 as I can have files of up to 4 MB which I can open

I have no possibilily to save the file to disk when the browser fails to
display it the file, all save as and view source options are blended out.

Can you tell if it has something to do with the file size? Perhaps the
problem files are the only ones over some size, like 64K or whatever.

Try saving to disk instead of viewing in the browser - you ought to be
able to do that much - then see if the file size is right.
