You may want to have a look at PloneWebMail by Giorgio at the Italian 
company 1000ASA.

In the PHP world, I can recommend Squirrelmail which is excellent:
http://www.squirrelmail.org

You could probably provide access to Squirrelmail within Zope/Plone 
using an iFrame.
