The only proper way is:

REQUEST = context.REQUEST
image_file = context.restrictedTraverse('/LDML/images/ldml.gif')
return image_file.index_html(REQUEST, REQUEST.RESPONSE)

This sets the headers correctly.

Everything else is a hack.
