I figured the problem was definitely with either zope, cmf, or plone.   
The solution was not obvious to me after searching through the source 
code of all of the above (one of my usual steps before posting 
anything).  I hoped that the developer responsible for the change would 
notice the email, and didn't want to count on that person monitoring 
every list out there.
