Please belay this problem - it actually appears to be a problem with my 
choice of regular expression.

the 'fileLink' regexp in the script goes into never-neverland for some 
links that have query strings containing links.  Once in this state, 
Python has to be killed to stop it.  Who'da thought infinite recursion 
could take so long...
