Martijn Faassen and I started something much like this at the sprint in 
Vilnius in December.

We were particularly careful to support schema changes in the presence 
of existing objects, and a bunch of other stuff.

Our work so far is in the schemagen package.

I really want to make time to finish this soon :-)
