I moved to an effective work-around so I didn't investigate much
further and can't say for sure that it's a real problem.  There are a
couple tickets in bugs.mozilla.org that sound as though they may have
some applicability here, particularly this one:

Beyond that, I don't have much to offer in the way of confirmation or
information.
