My understanding is that part of the problem is that sorting a dataset based upon regular expression (doesn't matter what algorithm you use) creates a rather large tree of possibilities that is largely impractical to sort, at least not without a lot of overhead. My compromise for the searches that I'm planning on using is to allow regex searches of "search results" from the catalog. This requires a bit more patience, as it is an unindexed search...
