I would venture a guess that your ZODBC problems have to do with the DA being Level 1.

for details on what Level 1 through 3 represent.
For an upcoming project we will need to work with MS SQL server as well so I've been discussing with Paul a bit about what it would take to fund a L3 DA. You might want to send him an email.
