The problem is that the distribution-supplied Python has been configured for a different set of tradeoffs (driving GUI sysadmin applets, mostly, across multiple languages / character sets) than those appropriate for powering long-running appserver. In this, if nothing else, Zope resembles a Java appserver: they are typically supported only when running a *specific* version of a *specific* JVM, which is highly unlikely to be the JVM / version shipped by a given distro.
