I believe that some versions of RH8 may use the new threads library that causes problems on RH9. The behavior you describe is similar to that seen on RH9. On Wed, 20 Aug 2003, John Ziniti wrote:

does a nice job of explaining the problem. I, too, am having this problem on RedHat 8.0, Zope-2.4.3, ZEO-1.0. Basically, requests for management pages time out, especially manage_menu (though manage_main usually comes back very quickly).
