Just to clarify. ZServer lets you publish to HTTP, FTP, PCGI, FastCGI (etc.) *simultaneously*. Thus ZServer still integrates with Apache, just in a concurrent, multi-threaded way. The publishers in Zope1 were not concurrent.
If you want to use the database by itself sans an IP server, that also is multithreaded.
In short, Zope2 does what you're asking for.

I've been reading the Zope 2.0 notes. It states that Zope 2.0 is multi-threaded only if used with ZServer. Will that always be the case or is that just a temporary limitation?

Zope 1.x is single threaded. Zope 2.0, which will be releases in alpha later today is multi-threaded. Note that extension modules that have operations that take a long time (e.g. database interfaces) need to take certain measures (releasing Python's global interpreter lock) to avoid blocking other threads.
My site seems to be experiencing some long lags in getting a page. Is there anyway to improve this?
Zope 2 should help alot.
