You say "one shouldn't have to use <!--#var "_['foo']"--> instead of
<!--#var foo-->."
However, i find it useful to write:

<!--#if "_['foo'] and _['bar']"-->
<!-- blah -->
<!--#/if-->

instead of:

<!--#if foo--><!--#if bar-->
<!-- blah -->
<!--#/if--><!--#/if-->
