in order to accomplish the second task effectively you should look at LoginManager; in doing so you will find answers to your first question. however, you may find you need to refer a lot to the mailing list archives to get LoginManager installed ;)
I've read that the LoginManager does not work properly under Zope 2.3. Will it be updated to work soon?
