[Zope] Number of threads

Hi all, z2.py has an option, -t. According to its internal documentaion, this controls the number of threads used if ZODB3 is used. Please could somebody explain this to me in a little more depth? Are the threads only used for interaction with ZODB? What are the pros/cons of running multiple threads?
