Perhaps you can take some cues from zope.org. Look at http://www.zope.org/standard_html_header/view_source and http://www.zope.org/standard_html_footer/view_source and pay particular attention to lines that refer to 'pp' (printable page) in the DTML. Clicking the Printable Page link at the bottom of the pages re-renders that page without the side navigation and such. FYI, you can use that view_source method all over the zope.org site.
