Well to be honest I'm not too sure on Linux but in the Windows world most Tkinter apps are horrible and the only one that is getting close is IDLE written by Guido et al. wxPython is my bet. The worst alternative is probably Java and it won't help with that Swing thing they have because that will just make it even slower.
