Have you tried ImageMagick from the command line? Something like convert -g 500x500 originalimage.jpg This will resize originalimage.jpg to be 500 px max high or wide. It will maintain the aspect ratio. If that works, then zope isn't seeing imagemagick... I'm not enough of a linux person to tell you want to do in this case.
