I am the webmaster for a company who houses one of the largest consumer transactional database in the world. We currently hold about 50 terabytes of information gathered from stores across the globe. We write our own in-house applications to mine the data and are looking at e-enabling our order-entry processes, all of which are written in a variety of languages (C, C++, Java, VB, etc...) We use Oracle, Informix and (limited) SQL Server for our databases. We avoid the hassle of hard drives and go with a more solid 3 1/4" floppy solution (just kidding). I've custom written our entire Intranet package in VB/VBScript using Active Server Pages and while I'm quite proud of my work (all content is managed by the end users through my own database driven, point and click interface) my code is not portable. Hence why I'm getting into Python and looking at Zope. So, scalability is a primary goal plus the ability to attach to many different applications in a variety of languages. Either way, Zope is already on our network :) R ----- Original Message ----- From: <sean.upton@uniontrib.com> To: <myself@robballen.com>; <zope@zope.org> Sent: Monday, August 20, 2001 9:29 PM Subject: RE: [Zope] Zope vs. the Big Boys
What kind of business is your company in? Perhaps you could describe the problem domain you wish to tackle? For certain problem domains, certain tools may or may not be more or less appropriate. Zope is a very good general purpose toolkit, but I can think of quite a few applications where it would be leaps and bounds better than other choices. I guess the answer really depends on what you want to do.

Honestly, how does Zope compare to some of the big names such as BEA and WebSphere? My company is looking at spending a lot of money in the Application Server realm, and I wondered how Zope stacks up against them. We're two shakes of a pen away from purchasing something, and I'd like to at least come back with an open-source solution just so that we can compare something.
Fire away. I need as much ammo as I can get (although, honestly, I'm leaning towards BEA)
