Is it possible to simulate this sort of environment in an XML client?
Hmm... what sort of XML client did you have in mind? I may be wrong, but I suspect you may have made a similar mistake to most people who encounter XML. XML is not a whole data format, in much the same way as TCP is not a whole protocol.
HTTP is a protocol that uses TCP, just as XHTML and DocBook are data formats that use XML. XML allows any XML compliant parser to PARSE the contents, but not neccesarily COMPREHEND it.
So, a custom XML client could be built which would understand whatever I sent it, and display the desktop accordingly. However, an 'off the shelf' XML 'client'... who could say.
I meant a custom client.
