The 'z' option automatically uncompresses the tar.gz file. At least it des for GNU tar. On Tue, 30 Jan 2001 08:14:20 -0600, I seem to recall, dale.w.lance@mail.sprint.com <dale.w.lance@mail.sprint.com> scrawled something like:
just checked man of tar - no "z" was listed. what exactly is definition of "z"? I assume it might be "ignore top level directory"?

two steps too many ;) Just tar -xvzf the original file,no need to copy and then delete the copy. /me ducks
