That's probably a good idea, but I'm a user, not an admin, and I think that this is bug, since Debian's already done everything, why reinvent the wheel? (BTW, I'm running Testing) I really think this since there is a "debian/rules binary" script...the ./configure script doesn't even show up until I do the command "debian/rules binary". If you can, why don't you just remove the Python that ships with Debian and install it from source into a standard location (/usr/local/)?
Then everything else should follow along smoothly...
