I assume you have Zope installed and are planning to run without CMF or Plone. One approach is to install the Cookie Crumbler product and create an instance in the root of your Zope. Check the box to have the installation process create the loggin-form and logged-in which you'll customize. Set the View permission of the root to "Authorized User", and override it for the login-form so that Anonymous users can get to the form, and you should be in business.
