I am looking for an (elegant) way to do this.
Pass it through as a hidden variable on your intermediate form:
<input type="hidden" name="oldreferer" value="<dtml-var referer>">
Then just use that in your final method:
<dtml-call "RESPONSE.redirect(oldreferer)">
