I believe I've seen non-usenet newsgroups on dejanews.. netscape.*, microsoft.* etc. For the record I too am in favor of usenet or single-server newsgroups bi-gatewayed with the mail lists (+ tri-gatewayed with a web interface!) a la python, ultimately. Setup & maintenance effort aside, no-one should lose by this arrangement, & choice is maximized.
