The answer is very simple: get "Learning Python" by Mark Lutz & David Ascher, ISBN 1-56592-464-9 Don't waste money on any other Python book. (I have 4 books on Python, and flipped through another two.) When you feel strong enough, then you may want to explorer more specific topics in Python, you can then buy more books.
