It's a pretty common idiom. Before Zope, and even before Bobo, Amos came up with a nifty hack called StickyForms, now incorporated into (non-Zope) htmlgen. With DTML you could use a hidden form variable to pass an argument when you don't want the server to maintain the argument's value. Is this what you're referring to?
