I have tried to set up a virtual host under Apache for a Zope based host but get a 403 Forbidden error when trying to access it.
How do I tell what is wrong?
I suspect there may be something wrong with the rewrite rules...
In that case, check the rewrite_log. Apache documentation will tell you how to configure its location and its verbosity.
Should I expect to have such a log by default? I don't see one and it isn't mentioned in httpd.conf.
apache.org has all the answers.
Does the id of the Virtual Host Monster in Zope need to specified in Apache anywhere?
No. You only need one Virtual Host Monster and you never need to refer to it by name. -- Paul Winkler http://www.slinkp.com Look! Up in the sky! It's GUY-X! (random hero from isometric.spaceninja.com)
