It works for me; the only way I could reproduce the error is if the long string had a hidden line-end character ('\n'). The strip() method gets rid of the character so that the javascript does not give the "unterminated character literal" error.
Please reply back to the zope list if this makes things work for you. It's not good to leave threads incomplete.
