I've played a little bit with zope, and recently decided to start figuring out how I would make it work for a real project. So I subscribed to this list, and also the CMF and Announce lists. And was quickly swamped by the amount of email.(of which there is a lot, much of which is very very specific to one person's problems) I've been on the list for 2 days now, and I've managed to save about 20 messages, or conversations, which I'm really glad to have seen, and read, and deleted what must have been hundreds of others. So I was wondering, does anyone do a summary for these lists? A summary like the Daily Python(http://www.pythonware.com/daily/), or eclectic (http://weblogs.userland.com/eclectic/) for XML-DEV Another project I've involved in that has a huge number of high traffic mailing lists, has one dedicated only to sending out summaries of other lists. (http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/listinfo/imc-summaries) I'm sorry if I'm asking for a resource that everybody knows about, and already exists. And if no one is doing this? Would somebody be maybe interested in starting? It would make these lists much more approachable. I do a summary of the Zope@Zope.org maillist traffic in the Zope news (http://www.zope.org/Documentation/ZWN), Eric Enge used to do a summary of the Zope-dev maillist, and Jon Edwards used to do a Zope-CMF maillist summary. Help on any of these fronts from anyone would be great. I've needed to put the Zope News on the backburner this week while I catch up with customer engagements, but it's usually released biweekly. ----- Original Message ----- From: "kellan" <kellan@protest.net> To: <Zope@zope.org> Sent: Thursday, September 20, 2001 3:58 PM Subject: [Zope] list summaries?

Jon and I could really do with some help from anyone with any time who's interested in the CMF. It's quite time-consuming, and I think we've only managed one summary in the last 6 weeks. Thing is, I don't think anyone's really got the time, and this is always going to be a problem with this kind of effort. Seb

ChrisM is posting a bi-weekly Zope newsletter *when* he finds time. Sometimes, it contains a summary of the mailing list traffic. Dieter

No thanks. I've already received a half dozen suggestions that I should take this on. So I'd like to nip that idea in the bud. :) (That is always the response to any suggestion) I already do lists summaries for enough lists, it takes time, though its my experience that it gets easier with practice. On a list that I'm familiar with, and feel comfortable with the domain it is easy to quickly sift through the chafe: you know what represent insight, and what is a FAQ, and you know whom is likely to post interesting messages, and whom isn't, and you have the historical context for it all. On a medium traffic list (of which I would say Zope@zope is high traffic list) it takes between 2-4 hours a week, depending on the week, and whether I had been reading with an eye towards summary. I've also found Mailman's archives (in thread view) can be an amazingly useful resource for compiling summaries.

So he said. I look forward to it. Amazing how everyone is always amazingly busy. In that way the open source community, reminds me of the activist community (which is where I get my other deluges of email from) thanks kellan -- "we reject kings, presidents and voting. we believe in rough consensus and running code."
