Of cause, this is a Netscape bug. Nevertheless, I would be happy to get some hint about the precise cause and how to circumvent it.

I have the very same problem. And while this isn't a perfect solution, Zope does seem to get along with mozilla 0.7 quite well. Of course, on my PII 350, mozilla is a bit of a pig. If you're a gnome-ish sort, Galeon also seems to work well, and doesn't seem quite as sluggish as mozilla.
