Just out of curiosity, are there any tools that I should be looking at for a slashdot-like website? I was going to use Squishdot, but the project seems dead. Swishdot sounds promising, but as far as I can tell from a Google search, it doesn't actually exist. Is there something else I should be looking at? -- Mike Payson | DawgDayz Dog Walking & Pet Sitting (206) 280-7295 | www.dawgdayz.com | mpayson@dawgdayz.com

It isn't dead, it's mature. It'll work with 2.6.0 by Xmas.

Yeah, Swishdot does exist, but you wouldn't want to use it. That's something else I hoep to remedy over Christmas. cheers, Chris

Mike, I have tried every web log system for zope and zope/cmf combination. Squishdot is descent (But does not work with the new zope yet). Swishdot is what squishdot will become (when is impossible to tell). I would say that squishdot is probably the best out of the zope systems, but it is extremely lacking. If you want to see implementation of it you can take a look at their site. I think it is a descent system but it is lacking a lot. If you are using CMF then you could use plone. Plone is a good system but there is no real weblog, just news submissions and it will be impossible to use for anyone who is less then advanced level. So after looking at everything I am putting out a new site (Jan 1 release date) and then converting the other one I run on squishdot to Geeklog - http://geeklog.sourceforge.net/. I think that it is the most robust system of any that I have seen and looked at with a lot of plugins. What I am planning on doing is using it for the weblog portion while using a zope back end for the other things on the site. It is pretty simple to do if you are using apache proxy based where you can set rewrite rules. actually stock CMF can be used to create a decent weblog and additional features can be programmed in in Python. For weblog functionality, plone does not give you really anything more than CMF, does it? also, ZWiki + BlogFace can give you a decent wiki with mailin and out among other things. and one does not need to be advanced to customize CMF or Plone. You can do a lot TTW. <--> george donnelly - http://zettai.net/ - "We Love Newbies" :) Zope Hosting - Dynamic Website Design - Search Engine Promotion Yahoo, AIM: zettainet - ICQ: 51907738 - e:george@zettai.net

Well, Weblogging and Nuking are two killer apps that everyone wants to use and everyone can use out of the box -- what I recommend is going over to ZopeZen to get their CMF interface -- it will allow you a very Nuke/Slashdot/Weblog-looking solution -- and its pretty dead sexy as well -- a much more "compatible" CMF skin than Plone (works with NLADA Document Library, etc, right out of the box last time I checked). http://www.zopezen.org/Members/zopista/About Tarball: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=55262&release_id=11383 3 CVS: http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/collective/ZopeZen/ When you install it on top of the CMF, your site will look just like this: http://www.zopezen.org Cheers, Chris
