Hi everyone, I'm wondering if anyone has tried using either of the LDAP adaptor products with NDS? I'm not even sure if it's possible, let alone whether it works well. I'm not an NDS expert, but our school uses it, and I'm planning to integrate it with our Zope-powered Web site to provide authentication for all our District staff and students. (I can't wait to start playing with the PTK on this.) -Tim -- Tim Wilson | Visit Sibley online: | Check out: Henry Sibley H.S. | http://www.isd197.k12.mn.us/ | http://www.zope.org/ W. I have a NetWare port of Python and Zope running on NetWare 5.1 as an NLM. I have an NDS module for Python as well. I've been planning to make a userNDS folder when the "universal user folder" was released.. Haven't seen that yet.. LDAP should work as well.. Sorry. I wasn't very specific. I'm running Zope on a Linux server.

Do you think it will work with my setup? Our sysadmin tells me that NDS is a form of LDAP. My hope is that the LDAP adaptor will do the trick. -Tim -- Tim Wilson | Visit Sibley online: | Check out: Henry Sibley H.S. | http://www.isd197.k12.mn.us/ | http://www.zope.org/ W. LDAP is actually an add-on product for Netware. it "translates" the NDS structure into something LDAP clients can deal with. elijah

No, Not yet. I'm hoping to get Novell to sponsor this port so we can make it open source. Shameful, but true. :-( (Novell is interested.. but they're also looking at PHP) Are you interested in Zope on NetWare, or just NDS authentication from, say, Windows.. mostly zope on netware. which i assume means there's an NLM python port, too. :) i had this neat little flash of insight that said something like "umm, HEY, you could run your zope on the netware server and not have to screw with begging for a second machine to run it on"... since in reality all the people who need access to anything zope here have accounts on netware as their primary login anyway.... :) an NDS auth folder product for zope is cool too, though. at this point the "target" machine for zope is a solaris machine, though... :) elijah

Yes, there is an NLM python port. I was going to present that at IPC8, but I wasn't able to make it. I'm not sure if my paper made it into the proceedings anyway. You can read about it at: http://www.murkworks.com/python/python%20for%20netware.pdf NetWare now ships with a 5-user Oracle 8i and IBM Websphere. It could be quite a nice Zope platform. Give it a go - Novell's LDAP server was released 1997 I think, so should have had plenty of time to mature. LDAP will be my preferred approach when I get around to integrating with the University NDS. If Novell's LDAP servers seem to be too hairy for you, or LDAP adaptor/Netware LDAP doesn't do quite what you want, there are Python classes released that allow you to communicate with NDS (NT platform only) - these classes could be used to configure the GenericUserFolder to your needs so you also have a backup plan. -- ___ // Zen (alias Stuart Bishop) Work: zen@cs.rmit.edu.au // E N Senior Systems Alchemist Play: zen@shangri-la.dropbear.id.au //__ Computer Science, RMIT WWW: http://www.cs.rmit.edu.au/~zen
Hey, my boss here at the college i'm attending just gave me a similar assignment of nds auth a few weeeks ago. After a lot of research, trial, and hair pulling it apears that LDAP is not the way to go yet. The NDS server requires SASL (related to ssl somehow) for the passing of passwords, and openldap doesn't support that yet, although there is a job on cosource requesting just that. I think you might be able to turn off the requrement of security, but i haven't been able to get the nds guy here to try to do that for me just yet. There is another way though using ncpfs. Ncpfs let you mount an nds partition on you linux computer, the side affect is that it allows you to also verify authentication. I'm currently working on making a userfolder based on this. I have the python part "swig"ed, so i just have to make the folder now. I'll post all this when i get it in a somewhat working fassion if you would like. The only problem with this is that you can't access other information from the NDS tree, such as groups. sRp Thus spake Timothy Wilson (wilson@visi.com):
