Hello We are about to configure a brand new machine for a Zopesite. Q: Which Linux to install.. We are tilting to RedHat.. Welcome any comparisons, recommendations, or guides about this.. RedHat SUSE Caldera Debian Corel ??.. -Is there a recent table or article which lists the pros and cons which relate to Linux family & Zope? -What are the statstics among Zope users ? -Does Digital Creations know? -Does it matter and if so : why / whynot? I do _not_ want to start Linux vs. Linux thread.. but it seems to me that a useful public page should be on zope.org with links to the How-Tos per Linux for gotchas etc.. If you prefer reply to me off-list. Thanks in advance any help. - Jason Cunliffe __________________________________________________________________________ Jason CUNLIFFE = NOMADICS.(Interactive Art and Technology).Design Director

Corel is more of a desktop version, so I'd say not, while Debian has a Zope package so it's very easy to install and upgrade. But I personally use Redhat (and will install Debian 2.2 when it's released. And OpenBSD when I get my CD...). Truth is that it doesn't matter. Especially if all you're running is Zope. If you're running Oracle or some other commercial software you'd want a commercial distrib such RedHat or SuSE.

Not really. Just use whatever you're comfortable with. -- Itamar S.T. itamars@ibm.net
Linux Mandrake is nice too. I've installed it after I had some problems with Red Had. Zope works like a charm on it. Regards, Tom

My vote is also for Mandrake. I had troubles with RH 6.0 and SuSE 6.3 . Switched to Mandrake 6.1, no problems - works beautifully with also an Oracle 8 database running. Last week, moved to Mandrake 7.0, seems to have a slight improvement in performance. ~ V.Satheesh Babu sbabu@tnc.org(Xt: 5348) . . http://www.csoft.net/~vsbabu/ /V\ - Duct tape is like the force. This is almost a religous subject but here's my two cents it depends on your experience and what you want to do. i've run Zope on Suse6.3, redhat6.1 and mandrake7.0 the differences between redhat and mandrake for a server are pretty minimal, basically the pentium tuning in mandrakes rpms which are meaningless in the context of installing zope and python. so for the purpose of this discussion i'll call them both redhat. for automating startup of zope: i personally found suse6.3 rc scripts to be alot easier to figure out they have skeleton in /etc/rc.d/ which you copy alter and symlink into the /etc/rc.d/"runlevel" directories you want to start and stop zope in. try man init.d (in Suse) for playing around with experimental stuff: i would def. have to say go with redhat. if you want to play with stuff like ZopeStudio(interface into Mozilla). Suse6.3 comes with a lot of stuff in RPMs on CDs but requires a bit more experience to get stuff installed from source and most sites don't offer suse RPMs which generally aren't compatible with redhat RPMs. Suse itself doesn't offer updates on most of its RPMs unless they're bugfixes for major programs. for locking the box down: i would go with Suse6.3. a good sys admin could lock either down. it really depends on your experience from a sysadmin level. suse6.3 has a pretty nice hardening script that passes SAINT with flying colors. Bastille Linux is basically a redhat hardening script but i haven't played with it at all and it tends to lag slightly behind the latest version of redhat. for a minimal install: i would go with Redhat. my choice: Suse, but thats my personal bias cause i think its a better distro. as for the other distros: the only other one i would consider seriously is Debian, cause it has a very nice package management system through which keeping your system updated is easy. in summary: i really don't think it makes a difference, just go with what you know.
