...it's written in PHP :-(
I've been suggesting for a while now that it might be time to write a zope-based forum. I love phpBB, it has a LOT of power, and we need something similar in zope, maybe based around CMF? That would allow for users and themes via skins. ZDiscussions (or ZUBB) are nowhere near powerful enough, and haven't been updated in a long time, though they may also be a good place to start. I think what a basic forum needs is: - User Registation/Preferences - Themes - Flat or Threaded views - Private messaging system - The ability to post HTML and/or UBB code - Support for different types of catagory/forum (Public, Private, Hidden, allow Anonymous post, etc) - Strong security These are just a few of thing things needed. The features on phpbb.com might be a good place to look at well. Tane Piper ZZICT - http://www.zzict.com Tel: +31 76 5155409 Fax: +31 76 5155412

I also need a good forum for Zope. The only thing I found was a .zexp forum I could import .... but it hasn't a lot of features ... So I would like to cooperate with someone else in developing a powerful forum for Zope .. Regards, Gitte Wange
I'm in! A complete ripoff from that PHP thing? Nobody knows anything better? We should have this discussion over at zope-forum, so I leave this thread now. Bye!

You are in for a treat then! I am currently writing a forum product. And it is going to be really easy to modify. At least on the filesystem. It is almost finished. But currently I only have a few "skins" for it. The most advances is like a newsreader. Boring graphics, but it nicely shows of most of the features. Se some preliminary screenshots on: http://home.mxm.dk/zope It will be finished this week! regards Max M Max M. W. Rasmussen, Denmark. I have a Zope-powered forum here: http://www.discogs.com/forums/ It's extremely simple and has the basic UBB look and feel, but no advanced features. I haven't had time to post the code on zope.org but if anyone wants it let me know. -Kevin

Both Keven and Max's ones look sweet, but I must admit, I prefer the discogs one, because I prefer the flat-view UBB style. Maybe it could be an idea that you two combine your code to make an all-round product. Many products offer what you are both doing in one package (Phorum springs to mind), of course once I get my hands on it, I'm going to add more "useless" functionality :) - Tane

I really like it because it looks like that php thing. Good, then I don't have to get used to and learn another navigation style! Just keep the look and silently add juicy functionality. ("silently" as in: don't make the interface more complicated) Peter
ZUBB has not been updated in a long time but is certainly not forgotten. I have been working on the next release for a month or so now. I am looking to release it this month. ZUBB 0.7.0 will include - A better look and feel - Optimized for quicker indexing - CSS - A updated search - Many bug fixes - Better documentation - A few more management features - Work with Zope 2.4+ From there on the road map looks like this ZUBB 0.8.0 - Discussion board view choices (threaded, flat) - Full CMF integration (users, prefs, editing) ZUBB 1.0 will probably be a major overhall. I personally have used ZUBB on more than a few sites and it works very well. One of them has over 3,100 posts on one board. I would be more than happy to have help in coding and ideas. BZ
Who cares? It works! I like it. There's product like this in Zope yet (even though Slashdot is very good, it's very different). Isn't the ZDP (or was) also written in something different than Zope. Paul Everitt should know. I remember some interview with him long ago but I've forgotten the details.

So which one was it then!? I'm making a fool of myself again. (could it be somewhere where they were using Manilla or something like that?)
