Yes, getting rid of the file (or renaming it, in this case) allows Zope to run. Not unsurprisingly, when I open the ZMI (see, I'm learning the buzzwords already!) the Zope version is listed as 'unreleased version'. I assume there's a way to specify that version file manually.
