RE: [Zope] Feature requests and questions

Here is a smattering of feature requests:
1) Have an install that automatically installs a default webserver that will run as a background process 2) have a feature rich install that has all the messaging, ftp, etc. packages pre-installed so users can just run it 3) an easier way to install new packages - like just clicking "install" 4) Port Zope to mac!! 5) Improve the admin interface with useful functions like "export site to HTML" 6) implement XML-RPC between two zope servers 7) implement a mailing list from within Zope
8) Product requests: [...]
The are all appealing, and many are valuable, ideas. Part of the problem we're trying to address in the zope community is having a way to organize the terrific stuff people produce, so we can all really exploit the potential the the system *and* the community, together, offers. Yes! It would be great if there were some sort of community website where people who are working on zope projects can post code and communicate with other zope folks. One model would be to look at how Frontier folks do this. Look at the scriptmeridian site and see how an independant 3rd party group was created to support Frontier. There are many correspondances, each uses a scripting language (usertalk, python) each uses a persisten database, etc. etc. There are many innovations that Frontier or Mozilla have used that could be reworked to work for Zope folks. How about a "planetZope" - meaning a meta site that hosts anyone who wants to build a zope site. For examples look at planetquake.com or planetunreal.com The top level site just acts as a front end to all the little sites inside. -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Andrew Wooldridge - Opinions expressed are my own - - andreww@netscape.com - http://people.netscape.com/andreww/ - ICQ: 6345881 - Find It at http://dmoz.org - -------------------------------------------------------------------------

With an eye towards functionality that would be appropriate for a community site, I would like to add my requests: 1) A collabarative filtering product (useful for creating features such as Amazon.com's BookMatcher or for implementing matchmaking on a personals site) 2)A collaborative directory product equivalent to the Open Directory Project (I would add the ability to mirror sections of dmoz.org, or at least be able to import them. they use RDF for export) with the added capability - through Zope-to-Zope XML-RPC - to distribute and share the directory dynamically among a number of sites. 3) a calendar product - one that lets users customize their view, as well as set up groups to share common events. (this could then be incorporated into the workflow product) 4) some simple e-commerce products (such as Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com affiliate link objects) I'll add some more as I think of them.
