Hei Ausum, o.k., but how to put my 2.3.3 content, products and extensions to new 2.4.0 ? Thank you Marcus Quoting Ausum <augusto@artlover.com>:
That's why they aren't smoothly compatible. Zope 2.3.x runs on Python 1.52, while Zope2.4 does on top of Python 2.1's new libraries.

I've personally never had problems about replacing the Data.fs file..... Just copy and paste and remove any locking and socket files. You can also just copy your Products folders (the user-installed ones) to the new tree. Just be carefull for things like Python-dbms adapters because you'll need the /lib/python sources that you installed the first time. Well, You'll have to ask the big people of zope... I'm just a user. But I doubt there is much difference in the file format of the Data.fs. Its just a big packing method of storage, thus I think the python differences lie in the guts of zope..... If there were big changes in how Zope was packing its Data.fs, methinks there would be a big shit-storm (activate Zope censors) on the list regarding upgrades.... Hi Gitte, its like every update should be done, no matter if there is an update variant of zope. The reason is: not every version is compatible or the third party products can cause problems. So the securest way is to build up an seperate zope instance, clean install of the nessecary products with thorougly testing. You should then export the old objecttree (may be pathwise) and import it into the new instance. (Good time to clean up!) If everything went well you can test all again and are ready. If any step makes problems, you always have an running copy of your site. I would never ever run a patch over a production site. Regards Tino --On Dienstag, 24. You should then export the old objecttree (may be pathwise) and import it into the new instance. (Good time to clean up!)
Some of my sites are running (without any problems) Zope 2.4.0 with Data.fs files that were created with Zope 2.1.x and used with every major Zope version since. I run an INSTANCE_HOME setup where the only change that needs to be made is in the 'start' script for where to find the new Zope installation. It makes things much simpler since my Products, Extensions, start scripts and data files are not in the Zope tree. If I need to revert back to another version, I just change one line and restart. So, ZC (or anyone else knowledgeable of Zope guts), is my Data.fs dirty from not going through an export/import process every time I upgrade, or is my positive experience doing it this way because there's nothing wrong with it? _______________________ Ron Bickers Logic Etc, Inc.

There's nothing wrong with doing that at all. The format of Data.fs has not changed for a couple of years now. In fact doing an export and an import is nearly equivalent to just copying Data.fs. In fact, several times I've used a Data.fs created by a later version in an earlier version of Zope. It really works. :-) Shane

Nearly. Isn't it so the export/import uses only the latest version of the objects? So it must by somewhat like packing and copying the Data.fs. I however did successfully resolve problems with versions during export/import.

I assume Zope 2.4 does not mix it up with Unicode-strings? Regards Tino
