I think the real problem was due to passing from DTML document to DTML method to ZSQL method. The variables suddenly disappear from REQUEST.

That's exactly right. The documentation doesn't make it clear that you have to call the ZSQL method with arguments, which is the precise point that I was missing. Does this qualify as a bug in the documentation? Thanks to all Peter.
