ZMySQLDA was not a problem but it depends on a separate package, MySQL-python, for which there is no binary. The executables of that name at the link above are simply self-extracting zips of python scripts.

This last statement was incorrect. MYSQL-PYTHON-0.9.1.WIN32-PY2.2.EXE, found at the above site, can be opened with Winzip but also WORKS AS AN INSTALLER (if, and only if, python 2.2 is already installed). Having done considerable groping on this one, I would not wish to add further confusion for anyone else.
