I've got a very strange problem with the PDF version of the Zope Book under Windows 2k. If I right click on it and select properties, the properties dialog never appears. Instead the explorer starts sucking down all my CPU cycles. This only happens with this book. The Admin guide shows its properties just fine. I have Acrobat installed, which seems to supply explorer with a PDF Properties tab under the standard properties tab. I'm guessing the ZB PDF is malformed in some slight way and the PDF Property pane freaks out. Is anyone else seeing this? Can it be isolated and fixed for the 2.6 book release (assuming it's not just me)?
How is this a bug in the book and not in your version of Acrobat? The sins of the data should never be visited on the reader. ;-) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Charlie Reiman" <creiman@kefta.com> To: <zope@zope.org> Sent: Tuesday, September 03, 2002 3:14 PM Subject: [Zope] PDF Zope Book freakyness

Because, as I noted, it only happens with that file. That doesn't mean acrobat is not buggy but it does mean that file is special, special in a bad way. I'm sure both components are in error in some way but I'm not likely to have much influence with Adobe. BTW, it's not the Reader I'm talking about here. I have Reader installed, sure, but it's Acrobat (sans 'Reader') that most likely adds the PDF Properties tab. That's why I imagine very few other folks have seen this.

There will be a PDF version of the 2.6 Zope Book... it may not cause Acrobat to lose its mind. ;-) It will likely be created out of the BackTalk PDF generation facility (the 2.5 Zope Book PDF was created, IIRC, out of html2ps). Hopefully Acrobat won't barf on it. FWIW, back in my windows-"dark ages" i have always found that using PDF-files within internet explorer was a really bad thing to do. save it to your drive and open it with acrobat reader. that solved many a crash for me. jens On Tuesday, Sep 3, 2002, at 18:01 US/Eastern, Charlie Reiman wrote:

To clarify: I'm not opening the file, I'm not talking about IE, and I'm not talking about Reader. I'm getting file properties from The Explorer... you know, the big GUI thing with the icons and drive letters. Sure, MS insists it can't be separated from IE, but we know better. I agree that opening files under Acrobat's OLE/COM/ActiveX browser integrating thing is generally not stable but that has nothing to do with my problem. Thanks for the help but i'm satisfied the 2.6 book will be created differently and probably not have this problem.

There's Windows Explorer and there's Internet Explorer. That's why I always avoid saying just "Explorer", which causes a lot of confusion like this one. In your case, I figure you meant "Windows Explorer". I don't have this extra PDF TAB you mention when I open Properties for a PDF file, so I can't even test your scenario, sorry. marcio
