Yes, thanks, I have backups. And I forgot to mention, I am running Zope 2.7.3/FreeBSD 4.9. Actually, I suspect it is not strictly a Zope problem. Squid (which I stopped) was running fine, and I was able to reboot the machine (remotely) with no effect. My ISP-friend, who gets to work in about 6 hours, may (or may not) be able to help with any admin-type issues, so any help from the list will be much appreciated. Did you tried to move away the old Data.fs* (backup first!) so that you can check if it is a sysadmin problem or a Zope problem?
Also, I see a strange message stating 'no address associated with hostname'... not sure if it can cause problems.
