Windows ME bug - abrupt reboot
a friend of mine is trying to get Zope 2.3.1 and 2.3.2 (python1.5.2 comes with the Zope distribution) working with Windows ME aka Windows millennium 4.90.3000 he can run python.exe - works. when he runs start.bat, bin\python.exe z2.py -D his machine abruptly reboots he can not get ZOPE working on his Windows ME box. I searched the archives to no avail. Anyway suggestions on how to track down the problem? any help greatly appreciated, ~runyaga

Hi Alan... this isn't much to go on, unfortunately. :-( There's a certain camp that says OSes shouldn't do this. I've got one foot in that camp, but I'm sympathetic. I'm afraid the only thing to do at this point is to try to get a collaborative complaint from someone else. If this happens regularly on Windows ME, we should fix it. OTOH, if it's something local to his installation, he should reinstall ME. - C

I have the same problem here (ME too). The problem started when I got my ADSL connection and after I installed a firewall (Norton Internet Security). Before that everything was ok. What I'm now doing is: not using my ADSL connection at the same time, and even restart my machine after the ADSL logout (necessary). Besides that turning off Internet Security. It's far from satisfactory but at least it works for me now. I'll have to explore this further because I need local Zope and the ADSL connection at the same time. Henny van der Linde

Henry, thanks for saying that. my friend was also running 'black ice' ? personal firewall and an abrupt reboot would occur on Zope startup. I was helping my friend remotely - and he isnt the most technical fellow. I believe he had 'disabled' the firewall program, but he may not have rebooted. A Norton program was running as well. Again, I didnt have time to debug the problem. He installed Windows 2000 Professional and the problems went away. I believe he is still running Black Ice on his new Win2k setup with no problems. thanks, ~runyaga

Aha, my Win Me installtion uses McAfee. I've heard of a number of problems with Norton Anti-virus. One of I've personally had is on a Win95 machine. Every few days, it goes into some auto-update mode and grabs all the CPU cycles, dragging the machine to its knees. A reboot is the only solution. This might explain the othe post about slow performance. Cheers, Tom P

I run Zope 2.3.1 on Windows Me with no trouble. See if he can run z2.py separate from start.bat. Offhand, it sounds like something got corrupted during download or installation. Tom P
