can anyone point me to some docs on creating/maintaining membership?

This is coming RSN from the Portal Toolkit effort. (Check out the Zope-PTK mailing list.) You can use Generic User Folder to roll your own today, or wait (or help) for the LoginManager which is being released in conjunction with the PTK. Kevin
