Likely because every change is a write to the database blocking other transactions with some risk to get ZODB conflict errors.

That is new for me, it sounds like if ZODB had a global lock for the entire database? I thought locks were more localized inside the object hierarchy tree. Interesting. [ Andreas Jung ]: -------------------------

I would use a counter on the FS or so. There are some counter products on zope.org working that way....no idea about product names.
