i took a look at SimpleUserFolder, but it didn't look like it was a dropin replacement for the XUF functionality I am looking for. Am I missing something?

No, it's not a drop-in replacement, but it's much easier to get it to do exactly what you want. In your case, You'd need to: 1. Add your DB connection 2. Add your SUF 3. Write one ZSQL method 4.
