vnc-over-ssh is probably faster than X11 over ssh, particularly if you use the -hextile option on the client. vnc's generally better in lower bandwidth situations. you could also try dxpc-over-ssh - dxpc does a bunch of caching and X11-specific compression, rather than ssh's generic compression.
