I think it may be time to revisit the issue of splitting the main zope@zope.org list. Proposed sub-lists: zope-install (compiling, installing zope, apache issues, etc.) zope-announce (zope and product announcements, including commercial services, moderated) zope-bugs (zope bugs, what else did you expect?) What do you all think? Michael Bernstein.

I definitely get overwhelmed by this list so I second that. I suppose the Zope development discussions (like different tags, XML, etc, etc) actually belong on Zope-dev already? If that's the case, the three list you mentioned seem okay. Or do we intend to keep the Zope list proper? What would its topic be? Regards, Martijn

Definitely. Way too much on this one. :) Oh, and how about having the reply-to address of posts that of the mailing list unless specified by the user? -- Phillip Beazley FutureSights -- Web Hosting, Development & Marketing Visit http://www.futuresights.com/ or call 727-577-SITE!

noooooooo. Bad, bad, bad, naughty. Don't fiddle the reply-to on mailing lists. I'm on some lists that do, some that don't - and the ones that do are _far_ more irritating to work with. see also: http://www.unicom.com/pw/reply-to-harmful.html Anthony

Well, I don't know... This is the only list that I have to MANUALLY type in the list address every time unless I actually want the reply to go to the person. 99.9% of the time, I want my replies to go to the list. -- Phillip Beazley FutureSights -- Web Hosting, Development & Marketing Visit http://www.futuresights.com/ or call 727-577-SITE!

read the article I posted a link to. if your mailer doesn't have a 'reply to group' or 'reply to all' function, then get a better mailer. reply-to list means that any standard mailer _cannot_ reply just to the original author, without the user having to manually edit the headers. reply-to list also leads to a higher incidence of mail loops, stupid vacation messages, and other rubbish, being sent to the list. that link again: http://www.unicom.com/pw/reply-to-harmful.html Anthony

It does. Imagine that. Never had to use it before. Like I said, this is the only one I've seen this happen on, out of around 15 or so that I'm currently on.

Yeah, and?
reply-to list also leads to a higher incidence of mail loops, stupid vacation messages, and other rubbish, being sent to the list.
If that's the case, the list administrator needs to get a better list server. -- Phillip Beazley FutureSights -- Web Hosting, Development & Marketing Visit http://www.futuresights.com/ or call 727-577-SITE!

Just 2 days away and my mailbox is overloaded with Zope mails.

Make sense to me - I've been 'out of the Zope loop' for two days trying to install LinuxPPC R5 - don't ask :( - and the volume of mail is pretty high. 'course, we knew this would happen after the LinuxExpo showing by the DC guys ! :) tone. ------ Dr Tony McDonald, FMCC, Networked Learning Environments Project The Medical School, Newcastle University Tel: +44 191 222 5888 Fingerprint: 3450 876D FA41 B926 D3DD F8C3 F2D0 C3B9 8B38 18A2

I think it may be time to revisit the issue of splitting the main zope@zope.org list.

Perhaps it's time to reraise the possibility (spectre?) of having a newsgroup - with sub groups etc.
My vote: a) Yes to "splitting the list" b) BIG YES to "zope-announce" I'm not an active Zope user at the moment, but I definitely want to stay informed about what's going on. So most of the list's traffic is noise to me... c) Yes to "newsgroups" (if spammers can be kept out) Best regards .co. ---------------------------------------------- daisy bytes! --------- Carsten Oberscheid co@daisybytes.su.uunet.de digital document processing http://www.pweb.de/daisybytes.su electronic publishing

Agreed (as I did earlier)

Zope announce would be useful to pick up the juicy bits without wading through tons of list first. Of course, the juicy bits might not appear on Zope-announce as easily as it's less informal..
c) Yes to "newsgroups" (if spammers can be kept out)
I'd prefer a newsgroups solution as well, myself. Regards, Martijn
