Sorry, I cannot help you with Windows questions...

You do have a shell - it is a "Command Prompt". Just run a program using the "start" command. That will detach it from the console you started it from (applies to NT, Win2000, WinXP. Win95/98/Me do not have the start command IIRC). Cheers, Tom P
