Hello again! After reading the many informative and helpful messages regarding my situation, I was feeling a bit overwhelmed and decided to get some p2p help. Today at work I asked my boss for help and he was glad to help me. Since Zope is installed on windows NT there, he went through many settings and areas with me, showing me things to try when I got home. Now that I'm home, here's what has been happening: By means of the Services panel, I found that Zope wasn't started on my home machine. After I clicked 'Start' a progress bar filled then disappeared. Then a pop-up window told me: "The Zope service WebSite on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do, for example, the Performance Logs and Alerts Service." The only option the window gave was to click 'OK.' I clicked 'OK' and changed the startup type to Manual. After clicking 'Start' the same thing happened. I changed the startup type back to Automatic. I then opened a command line and typed in the following: netstat -an and found nothing on port 8080, 8021, or 8090. I think that's because Zope wasn't started, but I'm no wiz at this. Then I ran start.bat and let it sit for twenty minutes hoping some of the advice about windows taking a long time to start Zope would prove pertinent to my situation. It didn't change from my previous screenshot (http://lunamanium.com/startbat.gif). The questions I have now are: a. Can I force Zope into doing some work so windowsXP doesn't stop it automatically? If so, how? b. Would changing the port Zope is supposed to run on help at all? c. Would upgrading help? My boss told me about the page template feature and it sounds very intriguing so I may upgrade anyway. d. Is there hope for me and Zope? Thank you all very much for your kindness and your assistance. I am trying to use Zope at home and am wondering if someone might be willing to help me get started. I have installed Zope 2.4.3 on my new windowsXP machine, but I can't access the control manager. I've tried the following URLs: http://localhost:8080/manage http://127.0.0.1:8080/manage and was told by my browser (IE 6.0) the "page cannot be displayed." Since those didn't work, I looked up my computer's hostname: I typed "hostname" in a command prompt and found it is "joplop-alpha." When I try the following: http://localhost:8080 http://127.0.0.1:8080 http://joplop-alpha:8080 the browswer says "page cannot be displayed."

When I run start.bat (as the online zope book instructs) a dos prompt opens containing the following information: C:\Program Files\WebSite>"C:\Program Files\WebSite\bin\python.exe" "C:\Program Files\WebSite\z2.py" -D I have read mentions of the -D being a default debugging setting which may need to be turned off. How do I turn it off? When I put any of those strings into the address area of my web browser, windows wants to know what program it should use to view it.
I also ran across an article which suggested one may need to create a HOSTS file in the windows directory. I don't know how to do that, but I follow directions very well.
During my latest installation of Zope I told it to run as a win32 service, if that matters at all. I uninstalled Zope and reinstalled it twice to try to get it to work - once choosing the manual option instead of the win32 service option. I have a DSL connection and I don't have any firewall programs running (I did have Zone Alarm enabled, but turned it of so it wouldn't interfere). I've looked around on zope.org and egroups' message archives for hours and hours now, but have found very little relating to this problem.
I may sound like a person who has no business trying to use Zope, but I use it at work everyday and love it. I can't wait to get it going at home. Any help will be unbelievably appreciated.

Jessica-- Drop to a command shell (can one still do that in XP?) and execute start.bat with the "-D" switch to see debugging info. (Or edit start.bat so that the call to z2.py includes "-D"). Then run start.bat and see what debugging info it offers. Probably is probably not your port, but if so, we'll see that in the debugging ouptut. Your problem is probably not related to your Zope version, so upgrading probably won't help, but PageTemplates are great and worth examining. Hope for you & Zope? Only time can tell. If you can't figure it out from the debugging input of start.bat, post its output to the list. I thought of a "long shot": Are you running any firewall software? Perhaps another program (like a firewall program) is not letting Zope bind to the ports. Just a thought. Whatever the reason, post the info here once you get it figured out. I'm sure this will come up again. And FYI: I have WindowsXP pre-installed on my brand-new Dell Inspiron 8100, and it crashes about 5 times per week. It has not (yet?) crashed under Linux. --Derek
